What is a pelvic floor?

The pelvic floor is a sling of broad but thin muscles. The muscles extend from the walls of the pelvis from the pubic bone at the front to the coccyx at the back, forming a floor across the lower pelvis. It supports the organs of the pelvis and the abdominal contents, resists sudden rises in intra-abdominal pressure - sneezing etc. and constricts the openings of the pelvic floor which is important for maintaining continence.
